SkyGlobe - Astronomical Computing on a Budget

I plan to welcome product and book reviews as a regular part of (AmSky). To start things off here is a review of a nifty piece of software for amateur astronomy.
The Celestial Observer certainly had no articles on astronomical computing. Indeed we used plain old typewriters to put the words on paper. Today there is no shortage of offerings of computer programs for the amateur astronomer. I recently* tried my first astronomical computer program. I picked up this program for only $5.00 from a shareware distributor.
Shareware is a marketing concept unique to computer software. Although much shareware is copyrighted professional quality software it is perfectly legal to make copies and give them to friends. I bought my copy from a professional shareware distributor who charges a per-disk copying fee.
Shareware is not free; it is a try before you buy concept. To continue using a program after a trial period you must pay a registration fee to the software developer. For your fee you get professionally printed manuals, program updates and technical support just like you do from the big budget companies.
Shareware programs range from just plain trash to programs that outperform the well-known big budget packages. However, the price is almost always much less than 'commercial' software.
The program I just tried is called SkyGlobe. When SkyGlobe starts it displays a stereoscopic projection (like the Sky and Telescope monthly chart) of the sky as seen from Caladonia MI. You can quickly choose your own city or one close to it from a list of about 200. By pressing any number key SkyGlobe will save your current configuration (with your city) under that number. After this, starting the program with the command 'skyglobe 1' will load configuration one.
I was immediately impressed with the pleasing color displayed on a VGA monitor. The sky is black with two shades of blue† showing the Milky way. The horizon is a green line and the whole globe can be rotated to show the sky below the horizon.
The display time can be set to follow the current time of day or any time, day or year you wish. I was also impressed with the speed at which Skyglobe updates the screen. /antares-auto-tune-efx-3-crack-pc.html. It is fast enough to be tolerable on an 8MHz XT.
The display is quite flexible. Some of the options are:
RA/DEC grid in two resolutions;
Varying numbers of constellation outlines:
Milky way on/off toggle;
Ecliptic and Horizon;
0, 7,000, 15,000, or 25,000 stars;
Sun, Moon and planets, with or without labels;

Messier numbers;
My only complaints about the program are minor. The constellation outlines look a bit unfamiliar. I would prefer to see the same outlines used in the original Sky and Telescope monthly charts or Astronomy's charts. Also I would like to see symbols used for the Messier objects as in the old S&T charts.‡ Skyglobe only puts the numbers on the screen. These numbers don't make it clear exactly where the object is and get a little bunched up in places.
All in all this is a pretty good program for the price. The registration fee is only $20.00. It is a great alternative to the Sky and Telescope or Astronomy monthly charts, especially since it shows the Moon and planets. It is also certainly more flexible since you can set the view for any time or place you wish.
